Successful verification

The city of Dornbirn climate protection project was successfully verified using the ISO-certified SILVACONSULT Carbon Standard® method. The credits from the verified carbon emission in 2022 are now available for sale. The first profits are to be used for more careful timber harvesting and reforestation with mixed tree species.

Forest audit in the City of Dornbirn forest

In spring 2023, the project was assessed by TÜV Austria as part of a one-day audit. The sustainable possibilities of the city of Dornbirn forest were discussed between the forester, TÜV Austria and Tree.ly on the sites.

Feasibility study completed

The project options for the Dornbirn municipal forest were determined as part of a feasibility study. The city of Dornbirn opted for a combined climate protection project. During the project term of 30 years, a carbon conservation project and a carbon removal project project will be carried out.

Meaningful actions with your money

The additional resources will ensure that the right measures can be taken for the forest to help it achieve climate stability.

Forest Restructuring

Monoculture stands are being converted into climate-resilient mixed forests.

Reforestation

Reforestation of former damaged areas is undertaken.

Measures such as browsing protection, regeneration promoting measures, etc.

Conservation-Icon

Conservation

Biodiversity enhancement, deadwood, water protection.

Protection Forests

Supporting the forest's protective function against avalanches, landslides, etc.

Harvesting-Icon

Harvesting

More expensive timber harvesting due to difficult accessibility, support by costly technology like cable cranes, etc. is made possible. In the forest of city Dornbirn harvesting can be carried out on small areas in a nature-friendly way and does not disturb larger areas.

Forest Infrastructure

Accessibility is improved through forest infrastructure.

Quote from city of Dornbirn

"The additional income will be invested in the sustainable increase of forest stock with a near-natural mix of tree species."

Problems

Insight into the challenges

In order to counteract the daily challenges in the forest and create a solution to multiple problems in this forest, investments are used for the following problems.
Beetle-Icon
Damaged Wood

Insects, fungi or other pests can infest entire forest areas and weaken or kill trees. Dead trees lose their ability to store carbon, contributing to the release of carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. During the years 2020-2022, the amount of damaged timber amounted to 800 efm. Almost half of this is due to ash dieback, the rest to the bark beetle.

Mountain-Icon
Difficult Access Situation

Forest access in Dornbirn is difficult due to the topographical conditions. Timber harvesting requires expensive technolog, 90 percent of the harvest has to be carried out with cable cranes.

Globale-Warming-Icon
Climate Change

Climate changes such as altered precipitation patterns, higher temperatures, and extreme weather events affect the health and growth of forests. They become more susceptible to disease and their ability to store CO₂ is impaired.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

How this projects supports the SDG’s

We're committed to supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals in all our forest carbon projects, directly and indirectly, because they are important to us, the people we serve and provide a great framework to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.

SDG 11

Sustainable Cities and Communities

This municipal forestry organisation works hard to secure the protective, welfare, recreational and habitat functions of their forests, in recognition of their key role in protecting the city and its environmental wellbeing.

SDG 12

Responsible Consumption and Production

The forest organisation’s running costs are covered by operating income; for seasonal utilisation equipment and personnel, external contracts are also taken on from smaller forest owners.
The icon of SDG 13 "Climate Action"

SDG 13

Climate Action

The climate protection project and the commitment not to fall below a certain stock level within the next 30 years will help to preserve the carbon sink in the forest. In addition, the city of Dornbirn will build up stocks and thus increase the sink capacity of the forest.

The icon of SDG 15 "Life on Land"

SDG 15

Life on Land

By keeping most of the surface area of the municipality of Dornbirn covered in trees, this ensures the health of the forests for many generations to come, while protecting the city from urban sprawl.

ISO 14064-2:2019 Based Methodology

Our projects use the "SILVACONSULT® Forest Carbon Standard" methodology according to ISO 14064-2:2019, which ensures that companies follow transparent and consistent methods to measure and report their emissions.

Externally Certified Projects

In cooperation with our partner, we organize the validation of our projects by an external certifier such as TÜV Austria. We then coordinate the annual monitoring by the certifier as well as the marketing and distribution of the verified climate protection services (VER).
